Online dating is a way to meet new people with similar kinds of interests and develop a relationship. These relationships are sometimes short-term and sometimes long-term. If people get impressed by someone’s personality, they can go to any lengths to develop and maintain a relationship with them. This often leads people to get exploited emotionally, physically as well as financially.

Dating scams are operated through dating websites such as Tinder. Scammers create highly attractive profiles with beautiful pictures of themselves and their vacation trips. When they select a target, they monitor him/her closely and find their likes and dislikes. Then they create a profile that attracts the target so much that he/she contacts the scammers themselves.  But these scammers are not patient enough and they contact the victim on their own sometimes.

After developing the initial bonding, they ask the target to maintain contact through any other platform such as Whatsapp to avoid being flagged by the dating app because these scammers send the same messages to many targets. The number of dating scams has increased greatly since the beginning of this month. This is because of 14 Feb, valentines day. The majority of single people try to find a partner before the 14 of this month and this haste makes them more vulnerable because they become desperate. And when they hook up with scammers they ask them for money. In these dating scams, scammers rarely meet their targets in person as they do their job before the day of the meeting.
